History[]
Harvested as a hatchling from a wild hive, Shrapnel endured the life of the vast majority of other domesticated Insecticons: Slave labor. Shrapnel's incredible strength, combined with his unusual ability to generate electricity, made him an asset too valuable to simply work to death like his brethren - though not enough of an asset to be treated well. Forced so substist on a diet of scrap and whatever energon he could chew out of piles of ore, Shrapnel was hungry - always hungry - and his attempts to feed himself from energon supplies were met with beatings and shock prods. Pain and hunger became anger and bitterness, and as Shrapnel 'grew' into his mature form, he became too vicious and unruly for hive workers to contain any longer, having killed (or eaten) anyone that tried to restrain him. Worse yet, other lower Insecticons were following his lead and commands in lockstep, leaving them on the verge of becoming a dangerous feral hive in the middle of Cybertronian society.
Convincing local authorities that Shrapnel was an unusual outlier beast (which he was), Shrapnel was sedated and carted away to be studied in the Institute.
